This video on sexual harassment among correctional personnel addresses the nature of sexual harassment, how it affects those involved, why it goes unreported so often, and what supervisors can do to eliminate it.
Abstract
The video portrays and narratively defines sexual harassment as an attempt to promise job benefits for sexual favors and engagement in verbal and physical sexually oriented conduct that is offensive. The effects of sexual harassment are noted to be reduction in the dignity, self- esteem, and job satisfaction of the victim; negative job consequences for the perpetrator; and an undermining of productivity and morale in the workplace. The video notes that sexual harassment often goes unreported because it is embarrassing for the victim or because she fears losing her job or being blamed. The video also portrays what can be done to stop or prevent sexual harassment, such as the victim's or supervisor's confrontation with the perpetrator to give a warning that the harassing behavior must stop, mandatory training on the nature of sexual harassment, and development of awareness among employees that certain behaviors or verbal comments may be offensive to other employees. An accompanying study guide presents the main points of the video and provides a review quiz and discussion questions.
