The American Probation and Parole Association contacted State legislators and legislative staff in 1991-1992 to obtain information on legislation concerning the use of intermediate sanctions to reduce prison overcrowding.
Abstract
Information on the nature and status of State legislation is summarized in chart form for such topics as alternative incarceration programs, alternative sanctions, boot camps, community-based corrections, substance abuse prevention, conservation camps, day reporting centers, drug testing, drug treatment, and electronic supervision and monitoring. Additional topics identified in the chart include fines, group homes, house arrest and home detention, intensive supervision, jail camps, reparation of stolen property, residential programs and halfway houses, restitution centers, sentencing alternatives, shock incarceration, shock probation, and weekend confinement. Supplementary information is presented in narrative form on the Community Corrections Act, sentencing guidelines, and the various topics listed in the chart. A State-by-State description of legislative bills, statutes, and acts pertaining to intermediate sanctions is provided. An appendix identifies legislative contacts by State.
