Summaries of 17 published research articles dealing with drug prevention issues and programs are presented.
Abstract
The articles describe the characteristics of steroid users in an adolescent school population, the impact of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Program, characteristics of smokeless tobacco use among high school football players, academically successful drug users, risk factors for drug use by rural adolescents, and school-based substance abuse prevention. The articles also examine environmental and personality differences between children of alcoholics and their peers, knowledge and attitudes toward alcohol and tobacco use among elementary school children, teacher perceptions of children of alcoholics in the classroom, community mobilization to reduce drug abuse risks, and parental substance abuse treatment and adolescent problems. Finally, the articles explore the perceived physical attractiveness and frequency of substance use by male and female adolescents, the relation between parenting styles and young adults' self-concepts and evaluation of parents, academic intervention for at-risk students with substance abuse backgrounds, the relation between peer status and health behavior, early adolescent adjustment to school transitions, and the link between drug abuse and eating disorders.
