This report presents statistical data regarding crimes, arrests, clearances, assaults on police, and police employment in Maine during 1991, as well as crime trends during the past 10 years.
Abstract
The police received reports of 46,695 index offenses during the year, an increase of 1.7 percent from 1990. Violent crimes decreased by 6.8 percent, while property crimes increased by 2 percent from the previous year. Twenty-four murders, 242 forcible rapes, 282 robberies, 1,078 aggravated assaults, and 3,762 domestic assaults were reported. Burglaries increased by 9.7 percent to 11,127, while motor vehicle thefts declined to 2,008. Law enforcement agencies cleared 30.9 percent of all index crimes, compared to 27.7 percent in 1990. Police arrested, summoned, or cited 53,426 juveniles and adults. Police experienced 387 assaults. The State had 1,914 full-time sworn law enforcement officers. Tables, figures, and map
