This paper describes the development of a revised sampling kit for use by police for collecting evidence from people suspected of illegal involvement with firearms or explosives.
Abstract
The kit can be used by police officers to sample the hands, fingernails, face, and head hair of a suspect for traces of residues of firearms and explosives. It can also be used to sample clothing and miscellaneous items. Prior to the kit's introduction, different kits were used for firearms and for explosives residues. The new kit is contained within a single sealed nylon bag divided into three compartments that hold the instructions, a disposal overall and gloves, and the sampling materials and labels. Each kit has a laboratory code number and logo and are issued against a signature. The kit has unified procedures, thereby saving time and money and simplifying procedures for the police and crime laboratory staff. Photographs and appended forms (Author abstract modified)
