This unit of instruction, part of California's performance objective-based training program for law enforcement personnel, covers first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Abstract
Knowledge domains of the instructional unit include peace officer duties at the scene of medical emergencies; considerations in and techniques for moving injured persons; and first aid for open wounds, specific injuries, bone and joint injuries, head injuries, diabetic emergencies, seizures, strokes, sudden unconsciousness, cardiac and respiratory emergencies, and environmental emergencies. Additional knowledge domains encompass medical emergencies with symptoms similar to intoxication, standards for CPR and emergency cardiac care, stages of labor and postdelivery treatment, childbirth emergencies, and legal principles of emergency care. The unit incorporates exercises designed to teach infectious disease techniques, bandaging procedures, bleeding control, techniques for clearing an obstructed airway, and first aid for shock.
