Abstract
PWWI is funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), with support from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), both divisions within the Department of Health and Human Services. This collaboration combined MCHB's expertise in high-risk pregnancies, primary care, and outreach to underserved populations with CSAP's work in community education substance abuse prevention and treatment. This substance abuse prevention grant program emphasizes the development of innovative, community-based models of drug prevention, education, and treatment; services include prenatal, postpartum, and infant services. Many of the programs also provide case management, parenting classes, and referrals to drug and alcohol programs. The projects reach a large proportion of low-income and minority clients; crack/cocaine is the drug most frequently addressed by these programs, followed by alcohol and polydrug abuse. The summaries provide information about the diverse types of interventions being carried out by programs serving pregnant and postpartum drug abusing women and their children.
