Various meetings and activities of concern to the international criminal justice community are reported.
Abstract
The first section of this document reports on the second session of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The commission focused on such issues as the need for strengthening the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program, the role of criminal law in the protection of the environment, violence against women, the control of the proceeds of crime, the organization of a ministerial conference on organized transnational crime and the preparations for the Ninth United Nations Congress. The second part of this document reports on a United Nations Mission to Russia, the purpose of which was to assist the Russian Federation in its attempt to reestablish a jury trial system. Research studies of this issue are solicited. The members of the new HEUNI advisory board are listed along with a brief report on its first meeting. A report on the International Scientific and Professional Advisory Council's Workshop on Victim Protection and Conflict Resolution is also included. This document concludes with a listing of upcoming meetings of interest to the international criminal justice community and publications available from HEUNI.
