South Africa's existing legal system is viewed as illegitimate and inaccessible to most people in the country, and the series of booklets is intended to make people aware of injustices, what is being done to eliminate them, and what still needs to be done. Policy proposals on a wide range of issues are offered that affect legal services and access to justice. These proposals concern general issues related to the legal system, such as access to lawyers and paralegals; practical suggestions for improving access to justice, such as involving community courts, setting up a constitutional court, and introducing public defenders; specific aspects of the criminal justice system, such as restructuring the police and prisons; and introducing ways of developing social justice for disadvantaged groups (women, gays and lesbians, children, and disabled people).
