A pool of 715 suburban high school students was surveyed to examine the link between a preference for heavy metal music and juvenile delinquency. The study also took into account the subjects relationship with their parents, importance of school and grades and associations with delinquent friends. The study found that where parental supervision was low, students who stated a preference for heavy metal music had higher rates of delinquency than other students. Contrary to researcher expectations, it was found that among the students who stated a preference for heavy metal music, it was the students with higher grades in school who were reporting a higher rate of delinquency. With regard to associations with other delinquents, it was found that such relationships are very significant in leading to delinquency but that a preference for heavy metal did not make a youth more likely to commit delinquent acts. 2 tables
