Abstract
A description of victim assistance programs lists the general services provided by victim assistance programs in each North Carolina county. Professional counseling and participation in self-help support groups are discussed as particularly important services for victims of violent crime. The psychological effects that typically accompany a violent victimization are then outlined. Guidelines are offered for how to cope with the violent death of a loved one. A section on child victims suggests strategies for abuse prevention for children and parents. A description of North Carolina's Victims' Compensation Program encompasses who is eligible, the compensation allowed and not allowed, how to qualify, and who is not eligible. A description of restitution is followed by information on the criminal justice system. The latter describes how to report the crime to police, arrest procedures, bail, district attorney responsibilities, and the first-appearance hearing. An overview of the North Carolina court system is followed by information on testifying in court, victims' rights, sexual harassment, the media and victims' rights, and personal safety. State and national resources are listed, and a sample victim information sheet is provided.
