The first section addresses fundamental concepts that relate to all forms of police deviance. It begins with a typology of police deviance, followed by a discussion of policies, procedures, and rules as they enhance the formal control mechanisms of the organization. Next, a more conceptual approach to organizational control is discussed with respect to police ethics, integrity, and values, with emphasis on the policy dynamics of these issues. Part I concludes with a discussion of police misconduct and peer group support. Part II of the book focuses on specific issues of occupational deviance, including corruption, sexual assault, lying, and the emerging problem of police drug use. Part III addresses issues of the abuse of authority, including deadly force, less-than-deadly force, and discrimination. The final section focuses on the management of police deviance, as it explores police disciplinary systems, complaint review mechanisms, and departmental liability.
