The reasoning of female inmates about AIDS transmission and causes was analyzed using data from 113 inmates at two women's prisons in Texas.
Abstract
The inmates completed the Concepts of AIDS Protocol, an AIDS information test, and a questionnaire regarding acceptance of people with AIDS. Results revealed that the majority of the participants had a middle developmental level understanding of AIDS. White inmates scored higher than blacks or Hispanics. The participants' developmental level of understanding of AIDS was moderately correlated with their scores on the AIDS information test, their acceptance of people with AIDS, their IQ, and their level of education. These results were similar to earlier findings with male inmates. Findings indicated that educational materials designed for use in women's prisons should be at the same developmental level as materials used in men's prisons and that AIDS educators working in women's prisons should anticipate the same type of misconceptions and difficulties found among men.
