The Accreditation Program completed its second full year of operation in 1991. During this time, the number of agencies seeking accreditation increased by 24 percent; the Accreditation Council resolved several important operational issues; and the Bureau for Municipal Police (BMP) staff developed or improved a number of resource materials to help agencies complete the accreditation process. A total of 201 agencies in 50 counties are currently enrolled in the accreditation program; this constitutes 36 percent of the 564 agencies that are eligible to participate. The increase in applications over the last 12 months can be attributed, at least in part, to BMP's educational and promotional efforts. The Accreditation Council collectively monitored all program activities through the review of quarterly written updates prepared by BMP staff and through verbal briefings presented by the Program Director at the beginning of each meeting. The Council also considered several ways of monitoring agency compliance with applicable standards once the agency has been accredited. In the area of program management, proactive steps were taken in five principal areas: internal controls, assessment logistics, agency inservice training, program evaluation, and staff development. Appendixes identify the agencies that are either accredited or are officially working toward accreditation and present sample articles on the program.
