Abstract
The average number of offenders incarcerated in Virginia Department of Corrections institutions for June 1993 was 17,019, a 0.02-percent increase from the 17,015 average inmate population in custody in May and a 0.6- percent increase from the average daily population (16,921) of June 1992. The average daily population for each month in the fiscal year 1993 appears in three special tables that cover major institutions, field units, and mixed field/work release units, respectively. The data show that the average daily population for fiscal year 1993 was 16,952, a 2.0- percent increase from 16,620 in fiscal year 1992. For June 1993 there were 17,001 adults (excluding prerelease) housed in State facilities having an operational capacity of 14,063. The Department of Corrections was thus operating at 120.9 percent of capacity. The operational capacity of Department of Corrections facilities increased by 183 in fiscal year 1993, from 13,880 to 14,063. The operational capacity and average daily population are shown for each facility for fiscal year 1993.
