Resettlement of prisoners entails providing them with the means to take personal responsibility and to act on their own behalf upon their release into the community.
Abstract
The basic elements of a resettlement program include a positive plan of action for life outside prison; decent and stable accommodation; employment, training, or education; a source of income; strong social and community ties; drug addiction treatment; and resocialization programs. The National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders is involved in this effort in the U.K. and outlines steps for resettlement in this report. Resettlement begins in prison, and in fact, there are British prisons totally devoted to resettlement, which can act as a model for future corrections policy. These guidelines describe how prisons and communities can implement resettlement programs that equip offenders with the necessary skills to reenter the community without resorting again to crime.
