Executive summaries are presented for three studies funded by the National Association of Convenience Stores: (1) The 1991 National Survey of Convenience Store Crime and Security; (2) Convenience Store Homicide and Rape; and (3) An Assessment of Robbery Deterrence Measures at Convenience Stores: Multiple Clerk Staffing, Central Station Based Interactive Television, and Bullet-Resistant Barriers. Based on the results of these studies, the Association plans to maintain a task force on convenience store security, conduct an annual industry-wide survey for base crime rates, provide members with a mechanism for uniform reporting of crime statistics, develop a rape awareness program for members, review existing robbery deterrence material, and attempt to reconcile industry robbery data with FBI Uniform Crime Reports. Further research will focus on the effectiveness of additional clerks in reducing robbery rates, identifying offender and neighborhood crime characteristics, the impact of high-resolution camera monitor systems in reducing crime, and the impact of bullet-resistant barriers.
