A discussion of the nature of elder abuse and neglect notes that researchers have not resolved the issue as to whether or not elder abuse has characteristics that distinguish it from the abuse of other adults. There is also too little information about the relation between neglect and other forms of abuse. Definitions of abuse thus far vary according to the purpose for which they are needed, although Pillemer, Finkelhor, and Wolf have probably reached an important stage in reaching workable definitions. Subsequent chapters draw together the perspectives of professionals from various disciplines to assess the clinical implications of abuse; key areas for social work; the legal implications of abuse and neglect; sociological perspectives; issues for nurses, physicians, and general practitioners; multidisciplinary approaches to dealing with abuse; and models for prevention of abuse and the role of caregivers. The authors argue for clearer explanations of abuse that go beyond immediate practical considerations and observations and provide clear guidelines for addressing and preventing the problem. 325 references and a subject index
