Federal efforts will focus on targeting drug prevention programs, targeting hard-core drug users, using policing innovations to reduce drug-related crime, and ensuring sanctions for all drug offenders. Additional strategies will include supporting research regarding drug treatment effectiveness, using research in policymaking, and seeking an increased international commitment to drug law enforcement. Specific measures will focus on demand reduction through improved prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation; the use of community policing and other strategies to reduce drug-related violence; streamlining government and empowering communities; and supporting antidrug policies around the world. The effort will be a collaborative one that includes State and local governments, the private sector, schools, religious institutions, community groups, and individual efforts.
