This article describes the hardware that is now available for the enforcement of speed laws in traffic law enforcement, with emphasis on the major technologies available, operational characteristics, training requirements, and use in court proceedings.
Abstract
The three categories of speed enforcement technologies are radar, lasers, and nonmicrowave or light-based technologies. Radar is the oldest electronic speed enforcement technology and still the method of choice for most traffic officers. About the only radar issues receiving major attention in recent years have been operator training and officer safety. Safety has been established, and training has greatly expanded. Recent designs include Stalker ATR, BEE 36 Series A, genesis, and H.A.W.K. Photo radar is one of the more controversial pieces of new equipment. Drone radar systems, which are designed solely to trigger radar detectors, are also being used. Lasers, another new technology, are awaiting the formulation of Federal performance standards. Non-electronic devices include Vascar and the Excessive Speed Preventer. In recent years, innovations have occurred in speed displays attached to radar.
