Discharge information can be useful for examining the relative rate of release by different categories of offenders, for examining the relative amounts of jail bed space used by various categories of offenders, and assessing the impact of various release mechanisms in achieving system objectives. If similar information is available over time, then discharge information can be useful in detecting emerging patterns. This article focuses on a case study that uses data from a jurisdiction that has experienced increases and decreases in jail population over the last several years. The case study shows how discharge data can provide useful information for improving the quality of justice and for considering other correctional options programs. Examination of this data can provide some guidelines for those interested in developing and maintaining an automated management information system to monitor the fluctuations in jail populations. The author outlines the information components for such a system.
