Of 300 law enforcement agencies randomly selected for the survey, 104 responding agencies ranged in size from 2 to 5,500 full-time personnel. Information provided by these agencies was compiled and entered into a computerized data base, according to the number of sworn personnel. Data were analyzed with respect to agencies offering field training officer (FTO) training programs, number of hours of FTO training, agencies providing annual FTO refresher training, training program organizational placement, supervisor training, and FTO compensation by agency size. Average figures for hours of FTO training, number of agencies providing refresher training, number of agencies providing supervisor training, and number of supervisor training hours were very close among all agencies surveyed. Although 90 percent of surveyed agencies offered specialized training to FTO's, the remaining 10 percent received no training. A majority of agencies did not provide refresher training, and almost half did not compensate their FTO's.
