Abstract
The treatment program aims at the total rehabilitation of drug dependents, thereby helping them to lead a normal and useful life. The treatment involves three phases: the restoration of physical health, the elimination of psychological and emotional dependence on drugs, and readjustment in the community. Techniques include a thorough physical examination, regular medical checkups, work therapy, individual and group counseling, employment services, and housing and aftercare services. The length of treatment ranges from a minimum of 2 months to a maximum of 12 months. The total number of persons admitted to the compulsory placement program in 1992 was 1,718, a 5-percent increase over the number admitted in 1991, but a 19-percent decrease from 1989. There was a significant increase in the number of young persons admitted during the year, a 78- percent increase over 1991. Data on personal attributes encompass age on admission, place of birth, educational attainment, occupation, marital status, living arrangements, district of residence, type of accommodation, the addiction process, and criminal history. 25 tables and 7 figures
