In 1989, a major upgrade was begun on the security system of Kansas City's (MO) Crown Center multipurpose complex.
Abstract
Some specifications were: 1) scrapping of all existing equipment when new, more-than-adequate equipment was installed; 2) solid-state cameras to replace tube cameras; 3) installment of modernized audio monitoring equipment; 4) integration of elevator intercoms and assistance request buttons; and 5) replacement of the old computer with a modern, sophisticated model that would coordinate emergency response throughout the entire complex. The upgrade was completed in 2 years, just 1 week after the target date. Thus, at an under-budget project cost of $1.5 million, Crown Center became one of the first sites in the country to integrate security for parking, businesses, shopping, and entertainment facilities. The security manager reports that the system is performing as planned.
