This white paper discusses some of the issues facing police agencies in Japan.
Abstract
Police priorities include combatting organized crime, dealing with problems related to foreign workers, promoting police-community relations, enforcing drug laws, controlling firearms, preventing juvenile delinquency, improving highway safety, cracking down on terrorism and ultraleftist activism, improving police equipment, and enhancing police professionalism. The first chapter discusses the evolution of crime patterns in Japan, focusing on changes in urban crime, crimes beyond geographical boundaries, disappearing social boundaries, and organized crime. Other chapter topics include contemporary communities and police activities, the wholesome development of juveniles, environmental concerns, traffic safety, maintenance of public security, police activities in disasters and accidents, crime trends, support for police activities, and international law enforcement cooperation. 91 figures and 107 tables
