A survey of prisoners in Canada's federal prison system was conducted to reveal the prevalence of criminal victimization in prison.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to provide a picture of victimization incidents in Canadian federal prisons. A survey was administered to 117 male prisoners who are housed in five federal prisons with three security levels. The results reveal that victimization rates at the prisons where the surveys were conducted are high. Of the 117 prisoners surveyed, 107 reported having been victimized. Assault and threats of assault were most frequently reported, together accounting for 50 percent of all victimizations. Sexual assault and robbery accounted for the smallest percentage of incidents. Personal property victimization was also high although not as high as personal victimizations. Victims tended to be younger than nonvictims, in the early stages of their sentences and housed in higher-security settings. 7 tables
