This is the report of the 36th year of Justice, a British organization comprising lawyers representing all three main political parties, dedicated to the principles of individual justice and the right to a fair trial in all territories for which the British Parliament is responsible.
Abstract
Two dominant themes of the year were concern about the criminal justice system and the barrier to justice for ordinary people. During the 1-year period ending March 31, 1993, Justice's two legal officers dealt with 823 cases, including 585 new ones. Most (617) were cases of miscarriages of justice. Nearly 100 cases were investigated in detail to substantiate claims of wrongful conviction. Two life sentence prisoners were released, two cases have led to retrials, and two more are being considered. The Justice organization works with two television shows: Trial and Error, and Rough Justice. In this report, five cases are reviewed. There also are sections on civil, administrative, and public law; family law; the legal system and procedures; human rights; the European Community; and internal matters.
