The monograph is divided into five sections, the first of which provides introductory information on OSAP's High- Risk Youth Demonstration Grant Program and lists resiliency factors that guide the development of alcohol and other drug (AOD) prevention demonstration grants. The other four sections report on 18 original grants awarded by OSAP in 1987. Each program is described in terms of challenges faced and lessons learned. Target populations of the 18 programs include juvenile delinquents, athletes of low socioeconomic status, ethnic/racial populations of low socioeconomic status living in urban settings, and youth not living at home. Programs funded to characterize youth in high-risk environments focus on the use of athletes to coach teenagers, adolescent drug prevention education, comprehensive youth services, delinquent adolescents who use drugs, and high-risk females. Models are developed for serving youth in high-risk environments, and problems faced in implementing demonstration grant programs are identified. Programs that have proven to be successful are evaluated, including Boys Club Smart Leader programs and AOD awareness training for teachers. References and tables
