This book presents six youth-worker-training articles and a 1994 North American directory of programs for runaways, homeless youth, and missing children.
Abstract
Three articles discuss the use of alcohol and other drugs among runaway and homeless youth, characteristics of "Street Children of the World," and how to determine the legitimacy of missing and exploited children's organizations. Other articles profile programs, including Kids Call, which is an outreach program to help get runaways and other youth in contact with an adult from their home communities; Operation: Home Free, which helps get runaways back home safely; and Project Safe Place, which assists youth and families in crisis situations. The directory profiles over 450 programs that serve runaways, homeless youth, and missing children in each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, U.S. Territories, and Canada. Profiles of runaway and homeless youth shelters include addresses, staff contacts, and phone numbers. A comprehensive description of each programs, its services, and intake policies is provided. The most current annual statistics regarding youth served and youth turned away are provided when available, broken down into the categories of homeless, runaways, and court/welfare youth. Profiles of missing children's programs also include addresses, staff contact, and their telephone numbers. A description of services is provided, along with information on fees, origin and use of operating funds, statistics on children served, and governance.
