Abstract
The volume identifies behavioral indicators of student substance abuse, stages of abuse, procedures for handling drug use situations in general and health emergencies in particular, key components of effective confrontation, and policy development steps. Information on student alcohol and drug use is provided, and symptoms and indicators of harmful drug use and dependency are noted. Policy and procedural considerations in responding to five drug use situations are described: (1) confirmed use, possession, or sale; (2) suspected use, possession, or sale; (3) student self- referral; (4) substance use health emergency; and (5) student affected by another's use. The importance of substance abuse education and awareness training and alcohol and drug policy development is emphasized.
