The author uses selected newspaper and police reports to argue that the crimes and immorality of girls has become a serious problem in the United States in the 1950's. Chapters discuss drug abuse among girls, theft, sexual promiscuity, prostitution, and female behavior that contributes to sexual victimization. A discussion of juvenile delinquency factors advises that delinquency most often stems from emotional diffficulties that derive from broken homes, poor parenting, parental abuse and neglect, and the failure of neighborhoods to provide attractive environments and opportunities for children to spend their leisure time constructively. The final chapter focuses on the prevention and treatment of delinquency. Strategies encompass parent education, the development of a nurturing family life, adequate family income and housing, positive community influences, and improved and expanded social services and child guidance clinics. Other topics considered are the police role, the juvenile court, social and psychiatric investigations, foster home care, and institutional care.
