The first article, entitled "Observations about Recent Correctional Architecture", is an evaluation of the state of the art, an interdisciplinary effort to understand what is being done. The author's primary focus is the offender's interest, which should be the compelling criterion in correctional design. "The Social Psychology of the Cell Environment" considers the effect of prison life on inmates. Crowding, loss of privacy, and sensory deprivation are three significant aspects of prison life that the author considers should be more thoroughly examined. In addition, the location, size and layout of prisons, the relationship of prisons to outside agencies, visitor and mail policies, and the design of adequate educational facilities should be evaluated.
