Abstract
The essays had originally been presented at the Second National Symposium on Restitution in 1977, the purpose of which was to facilitate the thoughtful and orderly development of restitution programming in the criminal justice system. Restitution is defined as a sanction imposed on an offender by an official of the criminal justice system requiring that offender to make a payment of money or services to a victim. It is differentiated from victim compensation, which is more directly victim-oriented and covered by the state. The collection is organized into seven themes: 1) Restitution in relation to the purposes of the criminal justice system; 2) Psychological perspectives on restitution; 3) Restitution and crime victims; 4) Restitution programming and research; 5) A description of service restitution programs; 6) A description of financial restitution programs; and 7) Future suggestions for restitution programs.
