Abstract
Because of their enormous influence over the content of television programs, advertisers must be a priority target for educational and informational outreach efforts that emphasizes the results of more than 3,000 studies on the effects of television violence. In addition, the Advertising Council should be encouraged to finance, create, and implement a national public service campaign on the issue of youth violence prevention. The campaign should address all the causes of violence, including the role played by media violence. Furthermore, a Council of Excellence should be formed, consisting of television advertisers that have demonstrated corporate leadership and public responsibility in addressing the problem of television violence and its impact on children. Finally, individual advertisers should be enlisted in the effort to address television violence.
