This study examines the Mutter-Kind-Heim prison in Frankfurt, Germany, and its practice of housing women prisoners with their infant children, and describes the present system of open and closed prisons.
Abstract
This article includes a brief history of the system founded by Frau Helga Einsele and a description of treatment of both mother and child. It concludes with the effect upon mother and child of the institution's "Come Together, Go Together" philosophy. A unique experiment that has worked, Dr. Einsele's units now flourish throughout the German penal system. The program has proven that the mother and child may come together, go together, and not return. Sources, interviews
