This article presents the results of research on corruption and fraud in local governments in the Netherlands.
Abstract
Data were gathered by means of a survey mailed to 107 functionaries from a sample of the town clerks of the 647 Dutch cities. Responses came from 77 percent of the town clerks, who manage local governments in the Netherlands. Results revealed that 102 new cases of alleged or actual local corruption and fraud were discovered each year. Findings suggested that 370 new cases of fraud and corruption occur in local governments in the Netherlands each year. In 67 percent of the cases, the allegation is confirmed. The police are notified in 52 percent of the cases of actual corruption or fraud. Police are notified less often in smaller towns (28 percent) than in bigger cities (76 percent).
