This volume contains 11 comparative analyses of important issues concerning the police and juvenile justice and delinquency prevention. The issues concern the role, function, and operation of police agencies.
Abstract
The first three issues discussed in this volume concern police policy formulation and the possible roles and responsibilities of the police. Issue 4 evaluates the proper scope of police authority to detain and arrest juveniles. Issue 5 extends this line of inquiry to a consideration of the authority of the police to protect children. Issues 6 through 9 deal with the questions of whether the law of arrest should apply equally to juveniles and adults. In addition, they explore the issue of how much discretion the police should be allowed and how it can be regulated. They also raise questions about police roles and procedures at each stage of juvenile justice processing. Issue 10 concerns mechanisms for relationships between police agencies and the court, particularly juvenile intake units. Issue 11 describes alternatives for organizing police services to handle juvenile matters. Footnotes, appendixes
