Inmates' general level of awareness and knowledge of AIDS and high-risk behaviors prior to incarceration were examined to assist in the development of an AIDS prevention and education program specifically tailored to the needs and preferences of the prison population.
Abstract
Data were collected at two correctional institutions in Toronto. The 100 randomly selected participants were interviewed individually and answered the questions on a survey instrument developed especially for the study. Results revealed that offenders had a high level of awareness concerning HIV and AIDS. Incorrect answers revealed gaps in their knowledge, primarily concerned with myths and misconceptions that must be clarified via education. Inmates were also interested in receiving HIV/AIDS education while incarcerated and strongly supported initiatives to develop such a program in prison. The offenders provided many opinions regarding various components in education programming and generally supported needle cleaning kits, condom kits, prison exit kits, and an AIDS education program in the correctional setting.
