The introductory chapter discusses the historical setting of Iran's justice system, the legal system, the religious background to the legal system, sources of Islamic law, and the Iranian constitution. Aspects of the judiciary covered here include qualifications, tenure, and authority of judges. Components of the court structure pertinent to this discussion include penal courts, the Islamic Revolutionary Courts, public prosecutors, and the police. The final chapter discusses the legal profession and Iranian Bar Association. Each component of the justice system is assessed in terms of its compliance with international standards of civil rights and recommendations for reform are presented. 110 notes
