The first and third tapes focus on three major responsibilities of social workers in cases of child sexual abuse: assessment of reports of child sexual abuse through interviews with the child, the nonabusing parent, the alleged perpetrator, and others; coordination with law enforcement officials; and case planning and case management. The second tape depicts three hearings that occur in most States when child welfare agencies intervene to protect a child who is believed to have been sexually abused: the emergency shelter hearing, the adjudication hearing, and the disposition hearing. With the exception of the family members portrayed, who are professional actors, all the players in these videotapes are members of the professions they portray. The court presentations are based on cases presented in the written resource guide. A resource guide accompanies the videos. The resource guide provides a historical overview of child abuse in the United States, followed by an outline of the social worker's responsibilities in child sexual abuse cases. The background of the case portrayed in the video tapes is presented, along with components of the emergency shelter hearing, the adjudication hearing, the disposition hearing, and the review hearing.
