The U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Justice held hearings related to the passage of legislation reorganizing the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974.
Abstract
The legislation strengthens support for State law enforcement efforts and for State juvenile justice systems. The legislation emphasizes school and community-based delinquency prevention programs, by addressing children at highest risk of delinquency, including runaways, abused and neglected children, and homeless youth. The legislation also provides programs to reunite families and authorizes mentoring programs in the schools. Witnesses at the hearings included two Senators, representatives from youth advocacy organizations, and a juvenile court judge.
