This teacher's guide provides middle school teachers with a curriculum for effective citizenship education and supplements the student textbook.
Abstract
The introduction presents background information on effective citizenship education, the curriculum rationale and organization, teaching strategies, the use of journal writing, evaluation criteria for student achievement, and student reflection on the learning experience. Like in the student textbook, the following chapters are devoted to the concepts of authority, privacy, responsibility, and justice. The instructional process for each of these concepts is divided into approximately 14 lessons. For each lesson, the teacher receives a lesson overview, lesson objectives, and a list of preparation/materials required. Next, a section on teaching procedures helps teachers introduce the lesson, present critical thinking exercises, formulate reading and discussion questions, and conclude the lesson. To encourage active participation, the text emphasizes both substantive civic instruction and interactive teaching methods with challenge students to think for themselves, develop reasoned positions, and articulate and defend their views.
