Controlling Youth Gangs: A Workshop

NCJ Number
148532
Date Published
1984
Length
87 pages
Annotation
This workshop uses lectures, individual exercises, group exercises, and information exchange to help participants learn more about gangs and be prepared to determine whether their jurisdiction has gangs and whether they are prepared to combat gangs, to formulate gang prevention strategies, to prevent formation of problem gangs, and to convert the workshop lessons into action.
Abstract
Following the orientation session, which describes these workshop objectives, the instructors present definitions of gangs, statistics on the prevalence of gangs in selected cities, the nature and extent of the gang problem and threat, and methods used by law enforcement agencies to control gangs. Other sessions cover ways to improve gang control techniques, proposals from gang control specialists in terms of mobilizing community resources and breaking up gangs, and resources available to agencies who are seeking to enhance their own gang control program plan.
