After defining the problem of juvenile sexual offending and exploring its scope, the authors provide a historical perspective and the rationale for intervention with this population. Theories of etiology and the recent development of specialized programs are addressed, followed by a developmental perspective that examines sexuality, deviancy, and the role of sexuality in sexual offending. The authors consider the consequences of sexual offending by analyzing the impact of these behaviors on both the victims and offenders, as well as the families of each. Next, the book presents an introduction to the justice system's legal and therapeutic responses, along with the foundation for specialized treatment approaches. The theory and concepts that support practice in all settings are presented, rather than specific program designs. Throughout the book, the sexual abuse of children is the primary focus, and rape and other deviant sexual behaviors are considered separately only where theory or practice differs significantly.
