Following a review of policy development for New South Wales' juvenile correctional educational services, this paper discusses the current provision and coordination of educational services for juveniles in custody and summarizes promising practices in the delivery of such services.
Abstract
The review of policy development for juvenile correctional educational services focuses on the agencies responsible for such services and outlines reviews and reports on the education of juvenile inmates in New South Wales. New South Wales coordinates juvenile correctional educational services through one centralized department and one decentralized department. Currently, interdepartmental relations are at their best, which has increased educational and training opportunities for residents of juvenile justice centers. Over the last 2 years, more juvenile residents have completed their School Certificates and their Higher School Certificates than at any previous time. Many have maintained their educational advancement while in custody and returned to their local schools to continue their studies. Promising practices that support effective special education programs in juvenile justice centers include functional assessments; appropriate curricula and instruction; transition services; and collaborative links among courts, schools, juvenile justice centers, and postrelease programs. 6 references
