In 1984, the State University of New York (SUNY) College at New Paltz initiated a master's degree program in sociology for New York prisoners, which is offered at the Eastern New York Correctional Facility.
Abstract
The program requires that students complete 36 credit hours of coursework and research. Courses are taught by professors from the department of sociology at New Paltz as well as adjunct professors from other colleges and from related disciplines. The first class of students was selected from prisoners already incarcerated at Eastern; since then, students have transferred to Eastern after admission to the program. Prisoner-students have the option of writing a thesis; topics have ranged from an omnibus prison survey to examinations of nonprison themes. Accomplishments of Eastern students have included conference presentations, journal publications, development of prison programs, formation of a College Library and Research Center, and postrelease success for various graduates. 2 notes and 31 references
