This training curriculum for improving the police response to domestic elder abuse is designed to increase students' understanding of police officers' relevant legal mandates, the process of aging, and the aspects of domestic elder abuse that police are likely to encounter.
Abstract
The manual provides practical information that can be applied to daily encounters police have with elderly abuse victims (potential and actual), suspects, and witnesses. The first module is an overview of elder abuse. Its goal is to help police better understand the scope and nature of the domestic elder abuse problem, as well as recognize the indicators of abuse and high-risk situations. Module II provides an overview of aging. Its goal is to provide students with information about the elderly population and aging process that will enable them to interact more effectively with elderly victims, suspects, and witnesses. The third module focuses on response and prevention. Its goal is to provide police with practical means for responding effectively to victims of domestic elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Module IV addresses the aging services network. The module's goal is to help police better understand the network of health and social service agencies in their communities and to enable them to interact more effectively in elder abuse cases. Module V focuses on legal, ethical, and practice principles. Its goal is to ensure that police are aware of the legal, ethical, and practice principles that guide decisionmaking in elder abuse cases. In addition to stating its goal, each module lists learning objectives and outlines information on each topic addressed in the module.
