This report summarizes the work of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice at its third session, which was held in Vienna, Austria from April 26 to May 6, 1994 and was attended by 37 of the 40 member countries, 59 other countries, and representatives of 58 intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations.
Abstract
At the first session, priority issues were identified as (1) national and transnational crime, organized crime, economic crime (including money laundering), and the role of criminal law in the protection of the environment; (2) urban crime, juvenile crime, and violent crime; and (3) the improvement of the criminal justice system. The participants determined that four issues would be priority issues for the fourth session: (1) organized transnational crime, (2) violence against women and children, (3) the organized smuggling of illegal migrants across national boundaries, and (4) illicit selling of children. Other topics discussed included technical cooperation to strengthen the United Nations program for crime prevention and criminal justice, standards and norms, and preparation for the Ninth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders in 1995.
