Two violent incidents in Lakewood, Ohio, brought a community from denial to overreaction, but led to collaborative efforts among police and school officials to address youth gang activity on campus.
Abstract
The media erroneously reported that the incidents were gang-related, producing a hysterical reaction in the community. City officials decided to revert to denial. Nevertheless, school administrators were already prepared to address gang-related issues, because they were aware of graffiti and the presence of would-be gangs with shifting memberships. A working relationship between the police and the schools gradually developed, with almost daily communications regarding the identities and activities of the gang members. This knowledge was communicated to the gang members themselves, and the groups eventually disbanded. Gang awareness programs were developed to convey information, suggestions, and recommendations for dealing effectively with the issue. The police and the school officials make it clear that they are working together by interviewing gang members in tandem and using other personnel, such as a community police officer, in an effort to thwart gang activity or membership. Although the extremes of denial and overreaction are still present, the police and school officials hope that a balanced approach will enable them to design effective approaches that will benefit all youth.
