This second volume of a panel study on understanding and preventing violence presents the commissioned reviews of research on biological influences on violent or aggressive behavior.
Abstract
An overview of biological influences on violent behavior considers research pertinent to genetic mechanisms, neurochemical mechanisms, brain mechanisms, and hypoglycemia and diet. The next paper reviews the available statistical evidence on genetic contributions to the probability of violent and related behaviors. This is followed by a discussion of the available research on features of brain structure and functioning that have been implicated in aggressive behavior. A third paper summarizes research on the roles of hormonal and neurological interactions in violent behavior. Research on animal and human subjects that has identified the neurochemistry of violence and aggression is reviewed, along with its implications for the management of these behaviors. The concluding paper provides an overview of research on dietary influences on violent behavior. Chapter references and a subject index
